Job Descriptions

 

Teach Baton Rouge is seeking outstanding individuals to serve as faculty for an innovative summer training program, which will prepare its participants to become effective beginning teachers of diverse student populations.  We need a dedicated and dynamic faculty and staff, who are responsible for the rigorous preparation of these teachers, to reflect on their teaching and facilitate workshops and seminars to help connect theory and practice. 

 

Summer Training Institute Overview:

The Summer Institute is an intensive site-based program that prepares non-traditional teachers for the classroom setting.  It incorporates both classroom teaching with constructive feedback from experienced educators.  The 7-week program features:

 

·         1 week introduction to the institute curriculum and goals

·         A summer school experience in which participants teach a class of students under the supervision of experienced faculty members

·         Daily meetings with faculty to discuss the day’s teaching and the institute curriculum to form connections between theory and practice

·         Afternoon/evening workshops, guest speakers, and group planning time

 

In order to effectively prepare non-traditional teachers, Teach Baton Rouge is seeking an Institute Director, Teacher Advisors, Workshop Presenters, and Content Area Master Teachers.  The level of time commitment and the particular responsibilities vary, and are outlined on the attached pages.

 

We expect to identify 1 Institute Director. They are expected to be available for the entire Summer Institute (May 26th   until July 9th). They will work approximately 40 hours per week. They will also be required to attend 2 full days of training, as well as several planning sessions prior to the start of the institute. They will be paid $20.00 per hour.

 

 

We expect to identify 4 Teacher Advisors.  They are expected to be available for the entire Summer Institute (May 26th   until July 9th). They will work approximately 35 hours per week.  However, Monday-Thurs will require the hours of 8am-5pm, while Friday will only be 8am-12noon.  In addition, Teacher Advisors must attend a full-day training session. They will be paid $20.00 per hour.

 

 

We expect to identify 7 Content Area Master Teachers. They are expected to be available every Friday of the Institute, starting May 29th   from 9am-12pm. They will lead small content specific groups discussing best teaching strategies. They will be paid $20.00 per hour. And will work approximately 5 hours per week.

Teacher Advisor (TA)

 

 Teacher Advisors are responsible for ensuring that participants learn to become effective beginning teachers and that students in the school sites attain rigorous academic goals.  The Teacher Advisor acts as both the school’s program liaison and the program members’ advisor.  To meet these objectives, the Teacher Advisor participates in the goal setting and strategic planning process and works closely with the school’s faculty and staff in executing the plans. The Teacher Advisor also serves as a resource to Institute participants by sharing samples of effective teaching materials, providing technical feedback and guidance on the participants’ teaching and ensuring participants learn the Institute Curriculum.

 

The Teacher Advisor’s responsibilities include:

 

o       Helping develop the program curriculum and manage its implementation and instruction

o       Planning and facilitating seminars to help connect theory and practice in the team sessions

o       Supervising summer school teaching through observations of TBR participants.

o       Working closely with institute faculty and staff

o       Facilitating the networking of the Teach Baton Rouge cohort members

o       Meeting with program members to reflect on their teaching and writing formal evaluations of the program members

o       Meeting regularly with the TBR staff to discuss progress of TBR members and program issues

o       Developing at least one original workshop to present to the institute participants

o       Attending Institute faculty training session

 

The qualifications for this position are:

o       Excellent teaching experience

o       A certified and/or highly qualified teacher as outlined by NCLB

o       Outstanding communication, organization, and critical thinking skills

o       Leadership and achievement

o       Excellent management and facilitation skills

o       Ability to work well with others

o       Commitment to the success of Teach Baton Rouge and its participants

o       Past experience with TBR Institute preferred, but not required

 

Teacher Advisors will work 35 hours a week, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. until noon on Fridays during the Summer Institute, which will last from May 26th until July 9th.

Institute Director

 

The Institute Director will be responsible for planning and implementing the daily operations of the Summer Institute. They will serve as a liaison between the program and the school sites in which program members are located. They will also be the contact person for all Teacher Advisors, and will be responsible for providing the TA’s with resources and feedback on their performance.

 

The Institute Director duties include:

·       Assist the Program Director to finalize summer curriculum and develop an operations plan for the institute.

·       Participate in hiring, managing, and training Institute staff

·       Ensure all participant and faculty materials are complete

·       Plan open and closing ceremonies

·       Serve as site leader to the schools in two capacities 1) to ensure practitioner teachers meet the objectives of the institute curriculum and 2) to ensure students participating in our summer school program achieve rigorous academic goals.

·       Conduct workshops, make classroom visits, observe participants

·        Facilitate staff meetings

·       Maintain institute communications (emails, newsletters, phone calls)

Teacher Advisors will work 35 hours a week, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. until noon on Fridays during the Summer Institute, which will last from May 26th until July 9th. A few additional hours before the start of Summer Institute will be required for planning purposes.

Content Area Master Teachers and Workshop Presenters

 

Content Area Master Teachers and Workshop Presenters are responsible for providing Teach Baton Rouge teachers with supplemental and subject or grade-level specific material in order to better prepare them for their teaching placement in the fall.  Workshop presenters and Content Area Master Teachers will meet with Teach Baton Rouge teachers on Fridays and selected afternoons during the last two weeks of the Institute.

 

Content Area Master Teachers and Workshop Presenters will be responsible for:

 

  • Preparing and presenting workshops for Teach Baton Rouge teachers.
  • Sharing best practices and age-appropriate resources with Institute participants.
  • Facilitating discussions to improve teachers’ practice.
  • Responding to program members’ evaluations of workshops.

 

Criteria for this position include:

-         Excellent teaching experience

-         A certified and/or highly qualified teacher as outlined by NCLB

-         Ability to work well with others

-         Leadership and facilitation skills

-         Commitment to the success of Teach Baton Rouge and its participants

-         Past experience with TBR institute preferred, but not required

     

 

Content Area Master Teachers and Workshop Presenters will work anywhere from two to five hours per week, usually on Fridays.
